Stamps frequently found on amphorae were usually applied to the handle or the shoulder of the vessel and recorded the name of the manufacturer, the workshop owner, or the merchant. They functioned as a mark of guarantee and as an indication of the origin of both the container and its contents, typically wine or olive oil. In this case, the stamp bears the name of the producer: Nicephorus.
