On her head she wears a cylindrical headdress (polos). The face features elongated, almond-shaped eyes, strongly defined eyebrows, and an arched mouth. The hair is arranged in large locks with lightly suggested curls. The chest and wings are finely decorated with dotted and incised lines, while the tail rises gracefully in an elegant S-shaped curve.
This refined bronze figurine probably decorated a large metal vessel, such as a lebes, a prestigious object used in ritual or ceremonial contexts. It was not merely ornamental but also carried a strong symbolic value of protection and sacredness. The sphinx—a hybrid creature with the body of a lion, the wings of a bird, and a female face—was often placed on tombs, temple pediments, and monuments, where it functioned as a guardian, protecting sacred spaces from unworthy visitors and desecration. Its enigmatic and threatening nature symbolized the need for caution and reverence toward the sacred. Associated with the legend of Oedipus, the sphinx embodied both the danger of knowledge and fate, as well as the power of intelligence and reason to overcome trials and mysteries. In the context of Greek Archaic culture, the figure highlights the tension between fascination and fear, much like other hybrid creatures—such as sirens and griffins—frequently found in religious settings.
